Mr. Sheikh Esam M. Ishaq
Sheikh Esam M. Ishaq serves as a Sharia Advisor to Bahrain Development Bank, Kingdom of Bahrain. Sheikh Ishaq serves as an instructor of Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and Qur’anic exegeses (Tafseer) courses in English and Arabic in various centers. Sheikh Ishaq is an expert in the application of Shari’ah Law across all aspects of Islamic finance. He has over 10 years residing on Shari’a board of a number of Islamic financial institutions. Sheikh Ishaq serves as the Chairman of Shari'a Board of Seera Investment Bank B.S.C. Sheikh Ishaq serves as the Chairman and Director of Muslim Educational Society.
He serves as a Director and Shari’a Advisor at Discover Islam. Sheikh Ishaq serves as a Member of Shari'ah Supervisory Board of Arcapita Bank B.S.C.(c), Corporate Investment Arm and Meezan Bank Limited. He serves as a Member of Shariah Board of Al Baraka Islamic Bank B.S.C. Sheikh Ishaq serves as a Member of Shariah Advisory Panel at Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.
He serves as a Member of the Shariah Board of BankMuscat SAOG; Tadhamon Capital B.S.C., Al Fares Private Equity Fund, L.P; Al Ritaj Investment Company and Gulf African Bank. He serves as Member of Sharia Supervisory Board of Meezan Islamic Bank, Islamic Republic of Pakistan and as a Trustee of Al Iman Islamic School. He serves as a Director of Middle East Traders at Kingdom of Bahrain and Zawaya Property Development. He is a Member of Accounting & Auditing Standards Board of (AAOIFI). He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from McGill University in 1982.
Dr. Aznan Hasan
Dr. Aznan Hasan was educated at University of al-Azhar, Egypt where he obtained a Bachelor in Shariah (Hons.) in 1994. He holds a Master in Shariah (First Class) from Cairo University, Egypt and a Ph.D from University of Wales, Lampeter, United Kingdom.
Dr. Aznan Hasan is an Assistant Professor in Islamic law and the former Head of Islamic Law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia. He teaches subjects such as Islamic Legal Theory, Islamic Commercial Law and Islamic Banking and Finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has served as a Shariah advisor to various financial institutions, legal firms and corporate bodies, at both local and international levels. He was a member of Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia.
Dr. Aznan is a licensed Shariah Advisor for the issuance of Islamic securities and Islamic Unit Trust Schemes, Securities Commission of Malaysia. He is a Shariah Advisor for Bursa Malaysia, Dar al-Istithmar, London and the Chairman of Shariah Committee, ACR Retakaful Bahrain and ACR Retakaful Malaysia. He is also Shariah Consultant, Asembankers Malaysia Berhad and an external Shariah Fellow at Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM). He is also a Bursa Malaysia's FBM Index Advisory Committee Member and a member of International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA).
Tn. Hj. Mustapha Hamat
Currently (since May 3. 2007) attached to the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as a "Distinguished Academic Fellow" of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF). Tn. Hj. Mustapha Hamat is also Islamic Development Bank's (IDB) consultant to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on the transformation of EcoBank into a full-fledged Islamic bank, and on the development of regulatory and institutional frameworks for development of Islamic financial system.
Retired as chief executive officer of the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia (IBFIM) on January 1, 2007, and had been a pioneer and leader in the nation's dynamic Islamic finance industry since its early days, he was deeply involved in setting up the first Islamic bank holding the post of General Manager for 18 years, first Takaful Company and Shariah-compliant fund management companies (founder member of the Board of Directors), and laying the frameworks for the Islamic banking and financial systems with the regulatory authorities and multilateral agencies, locally as well as globally.?
While at IBFIM, Tn. Hj. Mustapha Hamat was involved in the development of long-term talent development framework for Malaysia as well as for some OIC member countries. As a pioneer member of the Accounting and Auditing Standard Board of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) in Bahrain, he was extensively involved in the initial development of international accounting and auditing standards for Islamic financial institutions. While at the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board, he lead the development of the country's Islamic accounting standards.?
An accountant by training; Tn. Hj. Mustapha Hamat earned advanced degrees in business administration (MBA) from Henley Management College UK and Shahada Ulya in Islamic Studies and Shariah from Muslim College Malaya.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram Laldin
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram Laldin is currently the Executive Director of The International Shari'ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance Prior to joining ISRA he was an Assistant Professor at the Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). In the period 2002-2004, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
At present, he is the Member of Bank Negara Malaysia Shari'ah Advisory Council (SAC), Member of Shariah Advisory Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Member of HSBC Amanah Global Shari'ah Advisory Board, Member of Yassar Limited (Dubai) Shari'ah Advisory Board, Member of EAB (London) Shari'ah Advisory Board, Chairman of Islamic Advisory Board of HSBC Insurance Singapore, Shari'ah Advisor to ZI Syariah Advisory Malaysia, Member of Shari'ah Advisory Council International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM), Bahrain, Committee member of AAOIFI Shari'ah Standards, Bahrain and other Boards locally and internationally.
In addition, he is also the Member of the Board of Studies of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, IIUM. Dr. Akram holds a B.A. Honours degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan and a Ph.D. in Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. He has presented many papers related to Islamic Banking and Finance and other Fiqh topics at national and International level and has conducted many training sessions particullarly on Islamic Banking and Finance for different sectors since 1999. He is a registered Shariah Advisor for Islamic Securities with the Securities Commission of Malaysia and has acted as Shariah advisor in the issuance of several sukuks. In addition he is also prolific author of academic works specifically in the areas of Islamic Banking and Finance. He is the recipient of Zaki Badawi Award 2010 for Excellence in Shariah Advisory and Research.
He has participated and presented papers in numerous local and international conferences. Among which of his papers that have been published are Roles & Responsibilities of Shari'a Scholars in Shari'a Advisory Services; The Role of the Shariah Supervision, Shariah Governance; Liquidity Management in Islamic Financial Institutions (Arabic); Shariah Governance from Shariah Perspective and its application and The Shariah Objectives (Maqasid) in Contemporary Sciences. Shari'ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) since May 2008.
En. Wan Abdul Rahim Kamil bin Wan Mohd Ali
Wan Abdul Rahim currently serves as an Islamic Capital Market Consultant to the Securities Commission Malaysia, as well as the Project Director for SC-CMDF Islamic Capital Market Development Programme, Sukuk consultant for USAID; attached to the Egyptian Financial Service (EFS) for the financial market rehabilitation programme of Egypt besides acts as an Industry Expert, International Center for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). Prior to his current position, he was CEO of Abrar Discounts Berhad.
He is also a member of the Islamic Capital Markets Working Group (ICMWG) of Securities Commission, Malaysia; Member of the Task Force on Islamic Banking and Takaful for Labuan IOFC (LOFSA); Member of the Private Debt Securities Task Force, Bank Negara Malaysia; and was a Member of the Islamic Banking Committee, Majlis Tindakan Ekonomi Negara (MTEN) of the Prime Minister's Department (2004 - 2006) and Member of the MPDC under the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM) in Bahrain representing Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority (LOFSA) (2002 - 2006).
Tn. Hj. Mohd Tarmidzi Ahmad Nordin
Tarmidzi retired in October 2009 as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Etiqa Takaful Berhad, the global leader in takaful. Prior to retirement, he was also the Chairman of the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) as well as the Chairman of the Global Takaful Group (GTG). He is an associate of the Malaysian Insurance Institute (AMII), holds an MBA (Islamic Finance) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and is also a Registered Financial Planner with the Malaysian Financial Planning Council.
His career began in general insurance after completing the Associateship examinations of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) in 1978. He switched to takaful in 1985 as a pioneer management team member of the first takaful company to be established in Malaysia.
Post retirement Tarmidzi lectures at the Etiqa Academy, the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII), IBFIM INCEIF as well as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) where he was an Adjunct Professor. He was also an Advisor to ACR Re Takaful SEA. He is currently the Chairman of the Joint Insurance and Takaful Council (JITC).
Encik Mohd Tarmidzi Ahmad Nordin was appointed as a Director on 29 June 2015. He is a member of BIMB Holdings' Audit and Examination Committee. He is also a Director of Pak Kuwait Takaful Co. Pte. Ltd. Encik Mohd Tarmidzi has more than 30 years of experience in insurance and takaful industry, starting his career in the insurance industry in 1977. He was the Head of General Takaful Division at Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Berhad from 1985 - 1991; a Director at a loss adjusters company, Graham Miller (M) Sdn. Bhd. from 1991 - 1994; and Associate Lecturer at Malaysian Institute of Insurance from 1994 - 2001. From 2001 - 2006, Encik Mohd Tarmidzi was the Chief Executive Officer of Mayban Takaful Berhad and was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Takaful Nasional Bhd in 2006 pending merger with Mayban Takaful Berhad, and continued to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the merged entity, rebranded as Etiqa Takaful from 2007 until his retirement in October 2009.
Encik Mohd Tarmidzi holds a Master of Business Administration (Islamic Banking & Finance) from International Islamic University Malaysia. A Registered Financial Planner, he is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and an Associate of Malaysian Institute Of Insurance (AMII).
